We have a rescue cat - she was only six weeks old when we got her from the USPCA. Although she bas now been with us for four years she is still quite nervous and runs away if strangers come into the house. Because we are beside a road and two of our neighbours' cats were killed by vehicles, we only let her out in the back yard. But at least she has a happy life and adores my daughter - she is the only person I think she titally trusts.
